In April 2025, Dear Future, in partnership with our friends at Empathy Children Initiative (ECI), took a powerful step forward in the fight against period poverty in the Mayuge District of Eastern Uganda.

Together, we delivered a combination of reusable and disposable hygienic pads to two primary schools in the region — Bufulubi Primary School and Lukindu Primary School — giving young girls not just the tools for menstrual hygiene, but the dignity, confidence, and opportunity to stay in school.

Lukindu becoming the furthest away school we've ever delivered.

🌸 Bufulubi Primary: A Model of Empowerment

At Bufulubi Primary School, 126 girls received reusable hygienic pad kits, and another 104 girls were given enough disposable pads to last them two months. What made Bufulubi stand out wasn’t just its need, but its proactive approach to supporting girls during menstruation.

Despite being a government-run school in a remote area, Bufulubi has:

  • Built a safe room for girls to manage their menstrual health with privacy and dignity.

  • Implemented community education programs for parents, addressing the value of girls’ continued education.

  • Integrated curriculum and discussion around menstruation, early marriage, pregnancy, and disease prevention.

This school understands a sad reality: in many rural areas, there’s a sharp drop in girls’ enrollment between Primary 6 and Primary 7, often due to stigma, shame, or lack of resources. Bufulubi’s efforts, combined with this latest distribution, mean girls now have access to an estimated 3,024 months of care through these pads — a massive step toward closing that dropout gap.

After understanding the school's effort, our partner Empathy Children committed to supply the safe room with free pads for the future. A step they hope to replicate in our other support schools.

🌊 Lukindu Primary: Reaching the Edges of Need

ree

Next, we traveled to Lukindu Primary School, nestled on the shores of the Victoria River. The need here was even more pressing. Children walked barefoot. Basic supplies were scarce. But the girls were eager — eager to learn, to grow, and to stay in school.

We provided disposable pads to 54 girls, with a commitment to return soon with reusable options. As we continue educating the students and supporting the school, Lukindu is now firmly on our radar for expanded aid — not just in menstrual care, but also in school materials and broader educational support.

✨ Why This Matters

Menstruation should never be a reason a girl misses school — or worse, drops out. Yet in Uganda’s rural regions, it's a leading cause of absenteeism, early marriage, and abandonment. With this latest effort, we are not just distributing supplies — we are joining forces to:

  • Fight early marriage and pregnancy

  • Reduce discrimination and stigma

  • Empower families and communities to value girls' education

These are not just donations — they are investments in dignity, equality, and the future of young girls in Uganda.

Around the world, far too many young girls face a dangerous misconception — that beginning menstruation means they're ready for marriage. This harmful belief forces countless girls out of school and into early adulthood far too soon. For years, organizations like Save the Children and UNICEF, often supported by American contributions through USAID, have worked to challenge these deep-rooted cultural and systemic issues, striving to protect girls’ rights, health, and futures.
