A Letter to Myself
My name is Jack Dairon Antonio Vigilio. I am twelve years old and attend sixth grade at I.E. 32293 in Pucapuca, district of Chavinillo, province of Yarowilca.
Five years from now, I want to apply to a university to study engineering, but my parents cannot afford my education. They sell eggs, chickens, and onions and do everything possible to educate me. On my days off, I work in the fields and help save money for my studies. When I become a professional, I will help my parents however I can. Education is how I will move forward.
I want this world to change because there is so much crime and kidnapping, and the environment is polluted. Animals are not protected. Everyone should care for our planet, which is a gift from God, and live in harmony with one another.
Around the world, natural resources are neglected and misused. Mining operations contaminate water and the environment, animals die, and people’s health suffers.
We must plant more trees to purify the air. At my school, we have planted pine trees and practice recycling. In this way, we care for the environment and will never forget what we learn at school.
My dream is to see the world change. Beginning in childhood, we can care for our planet by planting flowers and other plants that make the environment beautiful. I want to live in harmony with nature; that is what I want for the future.
Sometimes I imagine that living in space on another planet would be different. I would like to discover what life is like there, far from humanity’s harmful actions on Earth. I would plant trees and grow fruit, potatoes, and corn. I would raise animals—dogs, cats, pigs, and chickens—so I could eat and survive on that new planet. After some time, I would return for my family and parents, and we would all live happily, away from technology. My grandfather says people lived better before cell phones existed. That is my dream for the future.
